Week 4: Inflated explorations

  • by Chiew_Jia_Hui

Elvin Kee and Chiew Jia Hui

Explorations of inflated forms, physically and virtually
In this week, experiments were made in the production of physical models and gh simulations with varied success.
The main formal exploration was based on the concept of creating 3D forms from selectively welded 2D double membrane sheets with reference to tensegrity and origami folding methods.

Possible weld patterns: Orange “air beams” with slim yellow channels to aid inflation

Physical model making
Attempts to automate seam welding through the use of a 3D printer were conducted on various plastic sheet materials from PVC to HDPE to achieve the weld patterns for the models. However this proved largely unsuccessful in creating even welds with sufficient air sealing for use.

  • Simple inflations, selective inflation and non inflation of surfaces
  • Inflation creates a joint

Gh simulations
Simulations were run on the various weld patterns were run. Given that most of the patterns explored thus far would require some form of pinning onto a plane, most of the forms seen can be regarded similarly to paneling.

Test for a simple weld pattern

Future steps
Moving forward, more explorations will be conducted in different weld patterns through both physical and virtual models.
